What is the festival all about?

Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, which is called the Elephant God and is the most loved of all the Gods. It is also an important religious occasion and is celebrated with much fervor and pomp.

Although it has its roots in Maharashtra and is celebrated on a much grander scale, it is now being recognized as a globally important festival owing to the tremendous significance Lord Ganesha has.

What is the importance of this festival?

Lord Ganesha is the symbol of wisdom, prosperity, and the destroyer of all evils.

It is believed that bringing this idol home will destroy all your evils and make way for peace.

People normally keep this idol or 5 or 10 days depending on the traditions.

The pioneer of this festival was Bal Gangadhar Tilak who started this festival publicly with a view to celebrate and bring people together.

What are the different delicacies prepared?

The traditional delicacy is called the Modak. It is essentially a filling which consists of coconut and jaggery and the outer shell is made of rice flour or wheat flour. It can be fried or steamed.

It is one of the most favored of all the delicacies and is eaten with a lot of enthusiasm.

Globally recognized-

Not only it is celebrated in India, but it is having religious and cultural significance as well globally especially in the States and in the United Kingdom.

There are communities specifically which cater to the celebration of this festival and holds a lot of importance.

Nowadays there are also many bio-degradable Ganesha murtis available and the trend is rising which is great for the environmental impact.
